On trashy treasure

Okay, I know this is gonna sound gross to some people but I like looking through trash. There I've said it--I've openly admitted to being a garbage picker. I'll never forget the first time someone called me that. My shift at the plant was about to finish and a dear lady I worked with at the time mentioned she'd seen a microwave cart on the curb in a nearby neighborhood. She told me it was sitting out with the trash and suggested I go have a look as I'd been saying I wished I had one. Anyhow, I had to drive by that way so I thought "What the heck! If it's in good shape I've got a cart, if not I didn't lose anything more than a little time." It turns out that cart was in great shape and I proceeded to load into the back of my little Toyota Corolla station wagon. It was only halfway in when some kid comes by on a bike and starts yelling "You dirty garbage picker!" I remember feeling foolish and embarassed and then did what I usually do--I laughed. I laughed and the look on that kid's face was great. He laughed too! I don't get embarassed and I'm not shy about stopping to look at a trash pile these days; much to the dismay of my children. I come from a long line of trash pickers (slight exageration) and someday they might even find themselves embarassing their own children with these strange trash picking impulses.  I'm sharing this because I'll be posting in the very near future on some of these "treasures" I may find.  If you find you share this character flaw you might want to check out this blog. Us "garbage pickers" gotta stick together ya' know?

  1. I'm so not a garbage picker but it is quite mind boggling what people throw out or even donate to the thrift store or recycling centre. I have scored some amazing things that someone obviously thought was junk.
